Our approach to regulatory defence
Every regulator runs its own process, its own investigation procedures, its own decision-making structures, its own culture around sanctions and remediation. What works before the NMC will not necessarily work before the GDC. What closes a case at investigation stage will not always serve you at a contested hearing. Understanding those differences, and building a response that fits the specific forum, is what specialist regulatory defence looks like in practice.
Regulatory Defence Limited acts before the full range of UK healthcare, legal, financial and education regulators. We handle GMC, NMC, HCPC, GDC, GPhC, SSSC, SRA, Social Work England, Teaching Regulation Agency and ACCA proceedings, as well as interim orders applications, registration appeals and High Court challenges. Our solicitor-led approach means you get substantive legal advice at every stage, not case management.
Jake Herman, the firm’s founder and director, spent years as in-house lawyer at the General Medical Council before establishing Regulatory Defence in 2023. That insider knowledge of how regulators investigate, decide and prosecute informs every instruction we take, regardless of which regulator your case is before.
Common questions
My regulator is not listed here. Can you still help?
Yes. The regulators listed above represent the majority of the cases we handle, but we act for professionals regulated by other bodies too. We have experience with Social Work England, the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA), ACCA, ICAEW, the Nursing and Midwifery Council in relation to nursing associates, and a range of other bodies. If your regulator is not listed, contact us and we will tell you whether we can help.
How quickly can you take on a case?
We can usually take on new instructions within 24–48 hours. If you have an urgent hearing or deadline, we can often act on the same day. Call 0800 088 4700 and tell us your timescale.
Do you offer a free initial consultation?
Yes. We offer a free, confidential one-hour consultation with Jake Herman. No obligation to instruct us afterwards.
What does representation cost?
We offer fixed-fee representation for the most common stages of regulatory proceedings, initial investigation responses, case examiner submissions, and interim order hearings, as well as hourly rate work for complex or contested cases. We provide clear, written fee estimates before you commit to any instruction. Call or email us to discuss costs for your specific situation.
Can you act urgently?
Yes. Most regulators have powers to impose conditions or suspend registration at short notice, and urgent hearings can arise with little warning. If you have an urgent interim order application, response deadline, or hearing in the next few days, contact us immediately on 0800 088 4700.
Do you handle cases in Scotland and Wales?
Yes. We act for professionals regulated across England, Scotland and Wales. For SSSC registrants or professionals subject to Scottish proceedings, we have experience of the relevant Scottish regulatory framework.
